“Be in the world, but not of the world.” From the very beginning, God has called his people to stand in contrast to the rest of the unbelieving world. In Matthew 5, during his famous Sermon on the Mount, Jesus illustrates this idea by calling his disciples both “the salt of the earth” and “the light of the world.” But what exactly do “salt” and “light” look like in the lives of Christians? How does Scripture define these terms and activities? Might there also be some misunderstandings about them which have crept into our hearts or even into the general Christian community?
